Do it with water
As well as an increasing population, the amount of water we use per person has gone up dramatically in the last 40 years. Australians now use around 350 L per person per day, far more than most other developed countries.
We cannot solve this problem simply by building enormous new projects which will cost billions to build and operate. This will never be enough if we don’t reduce our water use.
The good news is that there are plenty of easy ways to reduce water waste.
General
- Keep your systems well maintained – leaks, in particular, can be a leading cause of waste
- Upgrade to high efficiency water devices such as low-flow outlets and the latest cisterns.
- Reuse water as much as possible, either by hand (e.g. some cleaning water can be used on gardens) or by installing a greywater recycling system
- Consider installing a rainwater tank – there are many space-saving versions available
- Check your water use practices – e.g. there are usually better cleaning alternatives to hosing things down.
The Water Corporation has a number of resources that may be useful, including business information sheets, checklists for different business types and even a list of independent Water Wise Auditors who can come and give you expert advice.
