TODAYTECH Tackles Packaging
The irony is not lost on the TODAYTECH’s team. As one of the state’s largest distributors of ‘high tech’ computer equipment they are amazed at the incredible amount of paper they produce each day - so much for the paperless office.
This is one fast-paced and fast-growing organization – not much grass growing under anyone’s feet around here. TODAYTECH opened its door in Malaga in 1997 and is already a thriving IT business supplying computer products to thousands of resellers around Western Australia.
Each of the young staff members (the average age is mid-20s), has a recycling bin next to their desk and use it much more frequently than their rubbish bin.
“It made a huge difference when the recycling company let us put papers with staples in the recycle bins” says Russell Whitfield. “Now it’s easy - we don’t even think not to recycle”
State Manager Karen Birkett, admits the issue of recycling is something they work on but don’t always have the answers. “ All our equipment comes in boxes carefully wrapped by head office, then the courier who delivers it to us wraps it again to prevent any damage during travel. This is important, but it means transport actually creates an enormous amount of waste.” They have strong cardboard recycling procedures and also recycle items such as wooden pallets. Nest they’d like to find a way to recycle polyurethane.
With Australia currently having one of the world’s lowest rates of office paper recycling (just 11% compared to over 50% in the USA) and with cardboard being able to be recycled into new products right here In WA, those busy TODAY TECH folk are making a bigger contribution than they probably realise.
